Sam was born and raised in Southwestern Iowa. He graduated from high school at Wales Lincoln Consolidated near
Henderson, Iowa. He received his undergraduate degree from The University of Iowa in 1962. He attended the University
of Iowa School of Law, graduating in 1963.
Sam is admitted to the State and Federal Courts in Iowa as well as the U.S. Tax Court, the United States Court of
Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the United States Court of Federal Claims, the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals and the
United States Supreme Court. Sam joined the Rawlings Nieland firm in 1974, after having served as the officer in charge
of the Trust Department of the Toy National Bank in Sioux City (now, Wells Fargo Bank, N.A.).
Sam is engaged in the general practice of law, including but not limited to, litigation, agricultural law, family law
and probate and trust work. He also serves as a mediator.
He has served as president of the Woodbury County Bar, on the Board of Governors of the Iowa State Bar Association, on the
Iowa State Bar Association Tax Committee, and presently is a member of the Iowa Trial Lawyers Association.
Sam and his wife, Claudia, reside in Sioux City where Sam is an avid hunter and golfer. Sam and Claudia spend their
additional free time traveling to see children and grandchildren.
